Shipe Park Basketball & Movie Night

Sunday, November 2nd, 3-8pm

Join us at the annual Friends of Shipe Park Fall Movie Night and Basketball Contests! This year, we’re showing the Tim Burton classic movie Beetlejuice, and we will also be honoring the life of screen writer and producer Warren Skaaren who co-wrote the film. There will be music, basketball games, food trucks, and our annual outdoor movie. Don’t forget: Nov. 2^nd is the day after Daylight Saving Time ends, and the movie starts at sunset.

November 2nd is the weekend of Dia De los Muertos, so we are inviting neighbors to bring an offering and/or a remembrance to the event to celebrate a deceased loved one. We will have a traditional ofrenda set up to celebrate the spirits of the people we love who have departed our earthly world. Consider bringing a photo or an item that reminds you of the person you would like to honor.

There is a lovely Shipe Park connection with this year’s movie Beetlejuice. The Warren Skaaren Trust has donated the funds to plant a memorial tree and create a new shaded seating area in an underused portion of Shipe Park next to the playground. Thanks to Hyde Park neighbor Amon Burton in supporting this effort! More on that effort later.

Tacodeli will be selling delicious tacos at the event, so come hungry or bring your own picnic dinner. Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery is providing some sweet treats for the kids! We will also have free popcorn available during the movie.

3:00: Registration for Basketball Skills Contest

3:30-5:30: Basketball Skills Contest for Kids of All Ages

5:00: Picnic Dinner – BYO or enjoy a meal from TacoDeli

5:30-6:00: Dia De Los Muertos, Invite Remembrances for the Ofrenda 

6:00-8:00: Movie in the Park: Beetlejuice

• Bring blankets and/or folding chairs
• Bring your own picnic or purchase food from TacoDeli
• Clean up! (You bring it in, you take it home)
• Have fun with friends, neighbors, and family!
